Hickman chemistry teacher reflects on 40 years in education, from Ronald Reagan to TikTok
2022-05-04
In 2019, Hickman High School chemistry teacher Terry Brooks went viral on TikTok.
It was something he couldn't have envisioned when he started his career in 1982 and didn't expect when it happened.
When teaching about the periodic table, Brooks included an element joke of the day in his lessons. One of his students recorded the jokes on video and posted them.
"I gained TikTok fame for a very brief time," he said.
The jokes are probably funnier when someone is familiar with the periodic table, he said.
• What do you do with a wounded atom? Helium.
• What do you do with a sick atom? Curium.
• What do you do with a dead atom? Barium.
Brooks is retiring this month after 37 years at Hickman and 40 years total in education.
The common way to determine retirement is called "80 and out,", he said. Most teachers retire when their years of experience and age reach 80. The 64-year-old Brooks is doing 104 and out.
"I just kept going because I enjoyed what I was doing," Brooks said.
He has tried to always make classes challenging and interesting, he said.
"I love working with the kids," he said. "Chemistry is an exciting subject to teach."
He still starts his first week …

Will Albertsons smell success with its Philadelphia Cream Cheese promo? - RetailWire
2022-04-19
Select Albertsons-owned stores in Chicago and New Jersey are testing the use of scented diffusers that pump in the aroma of freshly baked cheesecake in dairy aisles near designated coolers filled with Philadelphia Cream Cheese to inspire baking over the Easter season.
According to a release from Philadelphia Cream Cheese’s parent, Kraft Heinz, about 500,000 cheesecakes with Philadelphia Cream Cheese are made during the Easter season (running this year from April 17 to June 5).
The test at the Jewel-Osco and Acme locations will determine a broader rollout.
“We want to show consumers how our immersive experience goes beyond just taste, and we saw this sensory activation as an exciting opportunity to bring that idea to life in a retail environment,” Keenan White, senior brand manager for Philadelphia Cream Cheese, told Advertising Age. “This is a first of its kind test for the brand as we think of new and interesting ways to invite consumers to dive into Philadelphia’s multisensorial brand experience.”
Kraft Heinz’s statement noted that sensory experience marketing tends to be more common in non-food retailer locations and restaurants.

Advertising has evolved. Let our expert explain the power of innovative marketing
2022-04-13
Late last month, Nike once again shook up the marketing landscape with a jaw-dropping new 3D billboard in Japan. It’s a concept that has turned the traditional billboard into something almost out of this world.
The move has once again elevated Nike as a leader in marketing. Augusta University’s Dr. Christopher McKinney, associate vice president for innovation commercialization, knows the landscape changes quickly with emerging media.
“The increase both in computing power and graphics processing unit power are transforming what we can do,” said McKinney, who is also a professor in the Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. “Now that the door of opportunity is more widely open, we’re seeing great ways to use that power in marketing.”
McKinney said Nike’s new 3D billboard has raised the bar for others to try to top.
“I do see this as a trend that will continue and even accelerate. Nike has thrown down the gauntlet; others will be trying to ‘one-up’ Nike. Beyond the graphic elements, we’ll see even more clever uses of 3D sound in some marketing applications. In more traditional billboard settings, the brightness, clarity and realism will improve to the point where it will be increasingly difficult to differentiate animation from …

McKinney Goes Deep, A's Avert Sweep in 4-1 Win Over Phillies
2022-04-11
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Billy McKinney homered and Daulton Jefferies and four relievers combined on a three-hitter to lead the Oakland Athletics past the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 on Sunday and avert a three-game sweep.
The A’s shut down a Phillies offense that scored 13 runs in the first two games of the series. The Phillies’ only two hits through the first five innings came from backups Garrett Stubbs and Johan Camargo.
Jean Segura hit his second homer off the season for the Phillies in the ninth off Lou Trivino.
Jefferies (1-0) tossed two-hit ball over five scoreless innings before he was yanked after he issued a leadoff walk in the sixth. Sam Moll, Domingo Acevedo and Kirby Snead tossed three shutout innings.
Tony Kemp’s two-RBI single in the ninth that made it 4-0 sent most of what was left of 33,507 fans headed toward the exits on a chilly, windy day at the ballpark.
Elvis Andrus hit a one-out double off Bailey Falter (0-1) and scored on Seth Brown’s bloop single to left in the sixth that gave Oakland its first lead of the season.
McKinney, who became the 1,000th player in Oakland A’s history on Friday, hit a solo shot to right off Falter in the …
